Double-clicking a .vcf file sends every card straight into Apple Contacts. If the file came from a colleague, an old phone, or another app, it may hold duplicates, broken cards, or far more people than you expected.
Compact Contacts reads the file first and shows you what is inside. No contact is written until you confirm the cards you selected.
Import step by step
- Choose Import vCard…. File › Import vCard… or Shift-Command-I, then pick the .vcf file.
- Choose the target account. Pick which writable Contacts account receives the cards, for example iCloud or Google.
- Review card status. Each card is Ready, Warning, or Blocked, with the number of emails and phones it holds.
- Select and import. Use Select Importable or pick cards individually, then import. You can cancel; the app stops after the current card.
What the preview warns about
| Status | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Possible duplicate | A contact with the same email or phone may already exist; nothing is merged automatically |
| Unsupported fields | Some fields will be omitted |
| Malformed or empty card | The card is blocked |
| Notes present, no Notes access | Notes in the file will be omitted |
After the import
The results screen lists Imported, Skipped, Failed, and Cancelled cards. Copy Redacted Report gives you a summary without contact details.
If an import stops part way, contacts already imported remain; there is no rollback. Run Find Potential Duplicates afterwards if the preview warned about matches.
Important: Import into one account at a time. Moving contacts between accounts is not something a vCard import can undo.
Questions people ask
Will duplicates be merged automatically?
No. Possible duplicates are flagged in the preview. Review them afterwards with duplicate review or Merge Studio.
Does it work on iPad?
Yes. Pick the file from Files; the same preview and statuses apply.
Are Notes in the file imported?
Yes, when the app has Notes access. Otherwise they are omitted and the preview says so.
