Contacts sync. A mistake on your Mac reaches your iPhone within minutes, and iCloud does not keep a per-contact history you can browse.
A two-minute backup before any cleanup is the difference between an annoying mistake and a lost address book.
Two kinds of backup
| Backup | How | Use it to |
|---|---|---|
| Contacts Archive (.abbu) | Apple Contacts › File › Export › Contacts Archive | Restore the whole address book as it was |
| vCard (.vcf) of affected contacts | Compact Contacts recovery step, or Export Center | Recover specific cards without replacing everything |
| iCloud restore | iCloud.com › Data Recovery › Restore Contacts | Roll iCloud contacts back to an earlier archive |
What Compact Contacts asks for
Bulk Edit asks you to save a recovery vCard of the affected records before applying. Merge Studio keeps its own encrypted recovery on the device for 30 days.
Deletion and exact-copy removal require a recent Contacts archive and a vCard backup. On iPad, a full vCard export from the last 24 hours plays the role of the archive.
Important: Restoring a vCard creates contacts; it does not replace existing ones. Check what is in Contacts now before importing a backup, or you may create duplicates.
A simple routine
- Archive. Export a Contacts Archive and name it with the date.
- Scope. Save a vCard of only the contacts you are about to change.
- Change. Make one kind of change at a time.
- Verify. Check a few cards and another device before deleting the backups.
Questions people ask
Does restoring an archive affect my iPhone?
Yes. Restoring replaces the contacts on the Mac, and sync then carries that to other devices.
Where should I keep backups?
Somewhere private. Archives and vCards contain everyone’s personal details.
Do Google contacts get archived?
A Contacts Archive includes the accounts visible in Apple Contacts. Google also offers its own export.
